Can you imagine a world where we subsidised slowing down?
Supporting citizens and communities to co-create local regenerative infrastructure and systems that serves life.
I took a train to London this morning at 8.44 am - It's been a while.
I’d booked a return for £97(!) with a seat.
On the platform they said it was full with some standing room.
Apparently they’d lost 4 carriages somewhere.
You could barely move inside the train. I could feel my body stressing up as I wedged myself in a gap trying to guess who might get off at the next stops.
Scanning the carriage, most folks were doom scrolling and mainlining caffeine (me too).
- Bloke in front on his phone shouting about how many ski trips he was going on
- Two women across from me looked absolutely exhausted.
- To be frank most people seemed utterly miserable.
Where are we going ?
This question loops around in my tiny mind all the time.
I began to try and imagine all the energy, materials, stuff, money, fuel, traffic, food, waste, arguments, generated through those 5 full carriages of stressed out, caffeinated, screen addled people moving at high speed somewhere most of them didn't seem to want to go.
And then pondered the relentless hidden impacts on human, more than human and wider planetary health which sits invisibly underneath it all.
Damaging the future we can't see to enable the speed and complexity of modernity and 'progress' today.
Yet spilling over all around us if we pay attention.
And I’m like - what’s it going to take for the kind of systemic shifts required to prepare for a destabilising of Earth’s system which is going to kick modernity hard and fast at some point.
I mean a global pandemic failed to do it.
We have to slow down as a species.
To figure out how to do more with less,
To find joy in mess.
And for most of us that will need to be subsidised.
Supporting citizens and communities to co-create local regenerative infrastructure and systems that serve life, that put life at the centre.
Instead of subsidising extractive industries and infrastructure to make us go faster and destroy life.
I mean why not?
