I mean a tree that you have an animate relationship with.
A tree that you go to for counsel, for clarity, communion.
I have a few.
There are twin oaks near me who I have visited regularly for 10 years, particularly in difficult times.
- When I’ve been despairing about the destruction on this Earth
- When I’ve been grieving with loss in my family
- When I’ve been questioning my work and where to point my energies in these unravelling times.
Time with those Oaks is always time well spent.
Things happen in the woods when I’m with them, energies shift.
Intelligence is received.
For most of our evolutionary time on this Earth we’ve been shaped through connection and relationship with a more than human world.
Meaning lives everywhere in the landscape, language is shared in-between species.
It’s a very recent thing for humans to see ourselves as separate from ‘nature’.
To be blind to sentience and intelligence in other life forms.
What if we’re now short circuiting these creative layers of intelligence that we need as humans?
With the story of ‘modernity’ and ‘progress’ unravelling at speed and making less and less sense, maybe now is the time to open ourselves back up to a vast intelligence of sentient life around us.
Which trees speak with you?
