In the micro scheme of things
'Stop trying to make sense according to the logic of the world that is ending'
I bumped into my friend Matt this morning when I was out walking the dog.
Hadn’t seen him for some weeks.
We got stuck at the first base in the ‘how are you ?’ question.
“Well in the grand scheme of things - I’m ok” I said
“Well if we’re talking about the grand scheme of things, then I’ve no idea” said Matt
“Yes, I’m ok when I’m in this hyper local reality around me, within me.
That feels real and true.
In the micro scheme of things,
It’s fine.” I said
We parted ways.
I returned home and put the kettle on, the dog returned to her micro scheme of things.
As I reluctantly scrolled instagram, a post popped up from Dougald Hine ( who’s been on the podcast this year) riffing on Federico Campagna’s work, who he spoke to in our episode…
Sometimes you are born into the ending of a world. The story you were born into doesn't have much further to run. The future no longer works. This is a thing that happens. It has happened to others before you. What moves are worth trying, in such a time? First, as far as you can, stop trying to make sense according to the logic of the world that is ending. Then start trying to make good ruins, to release materials from the structures of that ending world, materials that could be put to use in the building of worlds we can't even imagine yet.
This line in particular was a helpful reminder that I really needed to hear today >
First, as far as you can, stop trying to make sense according to the logic of the world that is ending.
A reminder to my mind that often wants to go towards the ‘making sense of a world that makes no sense’
Noticing again how exhausting that feels for me.
Trusting in my heart intelligence that this civilisational story is breaking down.
And that’s ok.
There are other worlds to be worlded in the compost.
Remembering to keep practising different ways of being, knowing and relating,
New ways of sensing beyond making sense.
With curiosity, compassion, care and tenderness.
( not always easy for me)
So in the micro scheme of things…
In the wider living world in the landscapes around me,
in the felt and experienced relationships I have with fellow humans and more than humans close to me,
in the communities of practice that I participate with on and offline
things are alive, messy, joyful, sad, creative, beautiful, confusing, emergent and exciting
There’s connection and imaginative things happening
beginnings and endings.
And for that I am very very grateful.
How are you in the micro scheme of things ?
P.S - Here’s the episode with Dougald from earlier this year, in my opinion it makes more sense now than it did then.
The podcast with Dougald was so moving Dan. I've been ruminating on his work and thinking all year, through his book, through Campagna's and through his conversations with Ed Gillespie on The Great Humbling. Thanks for your reflections.
Love, hope and gratitude are powerful tools
