Riding waves of creative courage and radical honesty

how can we begin to explore at a societal level different scenarios that we might be facing as a species in the spirit of uncertainty and not knowing?

Kudos and love to the Backwash crew on this latest edition. What if all those with influence found the creative courage to speak to these times with radical honesty?

Deep Adaptation is not an easy read. It won’t get many likes here. But imho we must explore, understand and hold at a societal level a range of scenarios that we might be facing as a species. To at least help everyone develop awareness and prepare for a range of possibilities.

To not do so is I believe an unforgivable act of the highest negligence to our young, future generations and all life on this earth.

What has this got to do with surfing? Too much for this post. In short I believe many surfers understand the dangers we’re facing and know deeply that without a thriving more than human world and stable climate there is no life. There’s definitely no surfing.

This edition is full of much fertiliser but it’s the inclusion of an excerpt from the Deep Adaptation paper from Jem Bendell that I’m saluting.

There’s pain, confusion and challenge coming our way whether we like it or not, for most on this earth it’s already here, and the faster we collectively accept it and work from there to develop resilience, the more possibilities we have to support each other.

The longer we refuse to accept irrefutable science the more unprepared we are.

You don’t want to be unprepared when you get caught in massive waves of relentless disruption- ask a surfer.

I don’t enjoy posting about this stuff, I want to live in a life sustaining world, where we put life at the centre of everything we do. The beauty and potential in that is off the scale. But I know in my body that we’re nowhere near where we need to be - we need to be talking at every level of society about what is happening and the range of scenarios that are unfolding. The latest IPCC report says we need total transformation at every level of society to deal with what is coming.
