What did you do when you knew ?
When you understood the true scale of what’s coming down the line for our species ?
I came across a thing recently called ‘Diffusion of Responsibility’ - a thing humans do, a socio-psychological thing - in technical speak.
When we know we need to make really important decisions, that we need to act urgently.
And because we are all being asked to act, the bigger the group becomes.
And the bigger the group becomes, the more we believe someone else will deal with it.
So we don’t have to.
This seems to be where we are today.
Climate and ecological breakdown is happening everywhere now, today, right here, right where you are.
At the same time we continue to extract, pollute, manipulate and destroy the natural ecosystems that a stable climate is created from, because apparently it's necessary for ‘our way of life’.
There’s UN report after UN report, screaming red alert to governments and business.
Peak time TV shows confirm the UK as one of the most nature-depleted countries on Earth.
Wildlife populations are collapsing.
Rivers are literally full of shit.
We’re all breathing toxic air.
Plastics are in our blood.
Peaceful protestors trying to raise the alarm are being arrested and locked up.
If you ask children to imagine a world where this was ‘ our way of life’ they would think we were totally insane.
And yet here we are.
We wait.
We wait for Governments to act with courage and urgency.
We wait for fossil fuel companies to stop new fossil fuel infrastructure projects.
We wait for the mainstream media to stop denying reality and confusing and dividing the public.
We wait for business to get to ‘net zero’.
We wait for the young to…sort it out.
Someone will sort it out right ?
We’re stuck.
Like ‘ants in a death spiral’ as Bayo Akomolafe put it to me recently.
Stuck in an exhausted story of progress and economic growth.
A story which is literally destroying the life we need to live.
Stuck in corporate pledges, long term targets, hubristic unproven technology solutions and the myth of climate change happening in a far away land.
Stuck in an illusion of separation.
That we are somehow separate from nature in this more than human world we live in.
That we can individually be ok, that we can do our bit, that our country isn’t as bad as that country.
That we can somehow remove ourselves from a breakdown of Earth’s System and protect ourselves from what is real.
And what is real?
That weather puts up fences.
That the atmosphere has borders.
That we can out-manoeuvre physics.
But here’s the thing.
It’s everyone or no-one.
It’s all crew - no passengers.
And there is something interesting, creative and hopeful emerging…
Lawyers, music artists, advertising execs - more professions are beginning to ask
What does it mean to practice a profession in a time of planetary crisis ?
And then begin to act on what is uniquely - theirs to do.
So here’s an offer from us to help more teams and more professions do just that.
One day in nature, near a place you call home - to get started.
Remembering, imagining, reflecting, connecting, acting.
Turning difficult questions into courageous actions.
Cultivating the creative courage to find your unique role and contribution in these times.
One day in nature.
(Brainstorming in meeting rooms and flip charts ain't going to cut it)
Because we’re in a relationship crisis.
With the Earth.
So if you're ready to cross the threshold.
And begin to move into new relationships with the world,
To find out What’s Yours to Do ?
Come and join us.
We’re seeking 5 organisations to get going with this summer.
What did you do when you knew ?
